Cheltenham is set to get a new charity shop as Emmaus is set to open a new premises on Tuesday October 1.

The homelessness charity, located in the former NatWest bank at 147-151 Bath Road in Cheltenham, will open its doors to visitors and shoppers from 10.00am to 5.00pm.

Reuse and recycle

The Bath Road branch is Emmaus will be focusing on reuse and sustainability, right down to its displays and its fittings, which are all upcycled from donations. DIY fans will also find lots to browse through, as there’ll be electricals, accessories, homewares and gently-used furniture on offer.

Cheltenham’s previous Emmaus branch, on Henrietta Street, closed in 2021 and this new branch will be the charity’s fifth shop, which will help it to carry on its important work with homeless people.

The charity is grateful for the support it received

Emmaus Gloucestershire’s business manager, Malcolm Pitt, says that the charity is delighted with the help and support it’s had to open this new shop. Renovating an 1820’s building, he added, brought some interesting challenges but the renovation team handled everything well.

People are increasingly turning to recycled and second-hand goods, said Malcolm. Reusing and recycling clothes, appliances and furniture isn’t just cheaper for shoppers, it’s better for the environment, he said. The Bath Road Emmaus shop is, said Malcolm, really happy to be able to bring more choice – and more affordable items – to the people of Cheltenham.

Come and get involved

Emmaus Gloucestershire is inviting Cheltenham locals to its Volunteer Meet & Greet on Thursday September 12 so if you’re interested in volunteering you can find out more about it. The shop will have several roles available, such as customer service, online sales and till support – email joanna@emmausglos.org.uk to find out more.

Seven days a week

Once the opening event is over, Emmaus Cheltenham will be open seven days a week, from 9.00am to 5.00pm Monday to Saturday and from 10.30am to 4.30pm on Sunday. From Tuesday October 2 you can donate clean, good quality items and clothing to the shop.
